Students and staff of St. John's were delighted to receive a surprise visitor on Friday morning, 16th April. Mother Igumene Sophia, abbess of the Voskresensky Novodevichy Monastery in St. Petersburg, dropped into the school after the morning Liturgy at the Cathedral, which she attended as part of her pilgrimage to the area.

Only a portion of our students were able to greet Mother Sophia, as many were off-campus visiting the San Francisco Symphony; but those where were present quickly assembled in the hall to sing 'Christ is risen!' to our guests. In return, they were given a few kind words of instruction and a blessing by the abbess, as well as a chance to greet Archbishop Kyrill and Bishop Theodosy, both of whom were present.

Visiting with Mother Sophia was Igumen Joseph and Priest Andrei from the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Russian Orthodox Church, San Francisco).
