On Monday, 31st May 2010 (Memorial Day), there will not be classes at St. John's Academy in honour of the national holiday. However, the Western American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church is providing a wonderful opportunity to spend this day in a pleasant, holy way through its annual pilgrimage to Fort Ross.

Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the fort's Holy Trinity Chapel at 9:30 a.m. A procession and service for the departed at the Fort Ross cemetery will follow. All the faithful are invited to share an open air meal after the service.

Fort Ross is where the first Russian Orthodox church in the United Sates was built. It is here that St. Innocent of Alaska and St. Peter the Aleut visited and prayed.

Additional information about Fort Ross is available from the California State Parks agency.

If you and your family would like to make this pilgrimage, joining many from our Academy community who will be there, please contact any member of the clergy of the Diocesan Cathedral for further details, travel directions, etc.
